Process Steps:
Step 1: Applying Emulsion to the Screen
Working under low-light conditions (or using yellow safe lights, avoiding bright white light), coat the
screen mesh with the photosensitive emulsion.
Utilize a coating trough to spread the emulsion evenly across one side of the screen, forming a uniform,
smooth blue layer.
Allow it to rest for several minutes, letting the emulsion air dry. The plate is now prepared. It resembles
a board covered with a “sensitive material,” awaiting the transfer of a design.
Step 2: Positioning and Contact
Position your film positive (with the image facing upward) at the center of the exposure unit’s glass plate.
Next, take your prepared screen plate and carefully place it, emulsion-side down, over the film, ensuring
correct alignment.
Crucially, the image side of the film must achieve intimate contact with the screen’s blue emulsion layer.
No gaps should exist between them.
Step 3: Vacuum Sealing and Compression
Secure the exposure unit’s rubber cover.
Engage the vacuum pump. A humming sound will indicate the machine is removing air from between
the glass and the cover.
Observe the screen being pressed firmly onto the glass by atmospheric pressure, eliminating any air
between the film and the emulsion. This step is vital for achieving sharp definition and preventing
UV light scatter.
Step 4: Exposing the Screen
Initiate the exposure cycle. The unit’s powerful ultraviolet lamp will activate.
Ultraviolet radiation passes through the glass, then through the clear sections of the film, accurately
reaching the emulsion beneath.
Areas under the film’s transparent sections receive light, causing the underlying emulsion to harden
or cure.
Areas under the film’s black, opaque design elements block the UV light. Consequently, the emulsion
in these shielded zones remains soluble or “soft.”
Exposure duration typically ranges from thirty seconds to several minutes, after which the lamp
automatically switches off.
Step 5: Developing the Image
Release the vacuum, open the unit, and retrieve the screen plate. Visibly, the plate appears
unchanged at this stage.
Remove the film positive. Then, take the screen to a washout area and gently rinse the emulsion
side with a soft spray or stream of water.
A revealing process occurs:
The emulsion in areas corresponding to the film’s black pattern (unexposed), being soft, dissolves
and washes away, uncovering the open mesh beneath. These areas will later permit ink passage,
forming the printed image.
The hardened emulsion in the exposed areas resists washing and remains, permanently sealing
the mesh openings to create the non-printing background.
Once rinsed, the screen clearly displays a precise replica of the film’s pattern—open where ink
should flow, blocked elsewhere.
Step 6: Drying and Curing – Strengthening the Stencil
The newly washed screen is wet and fragile. Place it into a drying cabinet.
The cabinet circulates warm air, thoroughly removing all moisture from the screen.
Once dry, the hardened emulsion becomes significantly more robust and durable. For enhanced
stencil life, a common practice after drying is to return the screen to the exposure
unit (vacuum not required) for a brief overall re-exposure to UV light, often for about a minute.
This “post-hardening” or “curing” step finalizes the stencil’s durability.
At this stage, a fully functional screen printing stencil is complete and ready for use.
Overview:
The fundamental principle involves using opaque areas to block light and transparent areas to
transmit it. A vacuum ensures flawless contact, while ultraviolet light acts as the precise “etching agent,”
transferring the film’s design onto the emulsion-coated screen. The result is a finished stencil for printing
applications.
